This is a mixed media assemblage of boxed jewels of the Scranton, PA Anthracite Coal Mining Industry. This is a visual narrative of the stages of coal; it's formation from plant life millions of years ago (lowest level drawer), to it's mining in the 19th & 20th centuries in Scranton, PA (middle level) and end result of combusted culm in the form of red ash (lid;top level). Red ash is a waste product from culm piles that burned and caused air pollution in Northeastern Pennsylvania for many years after coal production ended.
